The Sageman
The Schreyer Audio ‘Sageman’ is an original design inspired by our favorite mid powered blackface era amplifiers
from the 60’s. These amps were powered in the 40watt range from a pair of fixed bias 6L6s. We think this is a
great power level for modern day that gives you enough volume and headroom for rehearsal and stage, but also can
achieve a nice pushed tube amp feel at higher volumes. Examples of amps in this category would be the Pro,
Bandmaster, Super Reverb and Vibrolux. We opted to go with just a single channel and optimize that as opposed to
always carrying around two channels like those early amps. This reduces the size of the amp, making it more
portable, and reduces the preamp tube count. We bring the full Treble, Bass, and Middle tone stack controls out,
which was only offered on some of the lager amps (Super, Twin). In addition, we add a very versatile ‘Tone
Stack’ switch. A lesser known fact is that the preamps in all the blackface models from the 60’s were very similar
only differing slightly in the tone stack. As mentioned before, some did not bring out the middle control, but also
some differed slightly in a capacitor value in the tone stack. For example, the Super used a 0.022uF cap in this
position and many other amps used a 0.047uF cap. This changes the low mid shape, where the Super has more
low mid punch, and the Twin filters out more of the low mids. We found one version of the Pro that is half way
between (0.033uF). So we offer a three position switch that allows you to select the tone stack of your taste
between those three. This ends up being a very versatile control to dial in the tone you desire depending on your
guitar, speakers, speaker cab, and style of music you are playing. The power and standby switches have been
moved to the front for easier access. The Sageman has the classic tube driven reverb, and uses a top of the line,
full 17”, three spring medium delay Accutronics reverb tank. There is a footswitch jack on the back, and an
included footswitch to turn the reverb on and off if desired. We offer the Sageman in either a 1x12 combo, or in
head form. For the 1x12 combo, we selected the Cannabis Rex Hemp cone speaker. This speaker complements the
blackface era amplifiers very well. The speaker has strong, bold volume and presence that can be heard in a band
situation, but also has a very pleasing organic tone due to the hemp cone. We offer bias probe taps on the back
panel, and a bias trim pot accessible outside the chassis. This allows quick bias check and adjustment with a simple
volt meter and without having to remove the chassis. The back panel also has an impedance switch to select
between 4 and 8 ohm loads. The combo comes with an 8 ohm speaker, so you can add an additional 8 ohm
extension speaker and select the 4 ohm position when running both. When using the head of course, just select the
tap that best matches your speaker load. Each amplifier is hand wired in our shop in Carlsbad, CA, USA.
