Sage 28
The Sage28 is our version of a mid-powered combo amplifier with a tweed era vibe of touch sensitive
point-to-point hand-wired goodness from the those early straight forward Western Electric tube
circuits. The power (28 watts) is scaled between the 5E3 Deluxe and 5E8A Tweed Twin. But the cab
is the same 1x12 size as the 5E3 Deluxe which makes for a portable and light weight amplifier. We use
a dual 6L6 power stage for more volume output as in the Tweed Twin. Both of these amplifiers used a
split load phase inverter that breaks up a little earlier (when pushed) than the higher powered long tail
phase inverter amps. The Sage28 retains a good amount of clean headroom, but can also create that
harmonically rich over drive of those early amps as the preamp starts to compress the same time as
the power stage. We use a brown/black face era tone stack for a little more versatile tone controls.
This gives you that nice, rich, big bold classic clean tone. In the blackface type tone stacks, when the
bass and treble are half way, they are actually boosting the highs and lows a bit, that's the classic
Fender clean tone. Another trick is to turn the bass and treble down, and the volume up for a tighter
Marshall type mid-range drive. Since it’s only a single 1x12, we selected a higher efficiency ceramic
magnet speaker so you can be heard with a full band (loud drummer). However, we select the
Cannabis Rex Hemp cone speaker for a full organic harmonically rich tone. Think of the Sage28 as
powered between the 57 Twin and the 5E3 Deluxe, but sized in the 5E3 cab. Therefore having the
higher headroom and control, but in the smaller 1x12 combo for portability while retaining the sweet
breakup of the split load phase inverter when pushed. On top of all that, add a rich organic tone from
the hemp cone speaker that complements the touch sensitive circuit very well. It loves pedals, so put
your pedal board in front for all the effects you desire.
The Spring-Verb, and/or Tremo-Verb also make a great companion for this combo. Each amplifier is
hand wired in our shop in Carlsbad, CA, USA.
